Popular Api Security Articles

Production APIs are exposed to more than malformed requests. Attackers can manipulate identifiers, inject untrusted input into downstream systems, abuse authentication flows, force expensive application paths, exploit unsafe URL fetching, or overwhelm shared resources with requests that are technica

API security is not a middleware feature added after an application is designed. In production systems, security boundaries influence the entire request path: where traffic enters the network, how identities are established, how permissions are enforced, which services can communicate, where secrets

APIs expose business operations, data, and infrastructure across trust boundaries. A single endpoint may receive requests from browsers, mobile applications, partners, internal services, automation, and attackers. Authentication alone does not make that endpoint secure.

An API gateway is a service that acts as a single entry point for client requests to backend APIs. It receives HTTP requests, applies policies such as authentication and rate limiting, selects the appropriate backend service, and forwards requests to their destinations.

API security is not a single authentication mechanism or firewall rule. A production API needs multiple security layers that protect communication, control access, limit abusive traffic, validate untrusted data, and make suspicious behavior observable.

Production API security is the result of many small architectural decisions working together. Authentication may be correct while authorization is incomplete. Input validation may be strict while downstream dependencies remain vulnerable to resource exhaustion. Secrets may be protected while logs ac
